Penang:

The 23rd ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championship was officially declared open today in a spirited ceremony that brought together over 400 participants from 21 countries. Hosted in Penang from 1st to 11th July 2025, this prestigious international tournament unites young chess talents from ASEAN nations and dialogue partners including the United States, China, Russia, India, South Korea, and Japan.

A special message from the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, was read during the opening, conveying his heartfelt congratulations to the Penang Chess Association and the Malaysian Chess Federation for their efforts in organizing the championship.

“Malaysia is truly honoured to be entrusted with hosting this prestigious tournament,” the Prime Minister stated. “Chess is not merely a game of strategy; it is a platform for sharpening the intellect, cultivating discipline, and fostering healthy competition.”

He expressed confidence that the event would not only boost regional sportsmanship but also foster diplomatic ties and mutual understanding among participating countries.

The championship was declared open with a resounding call to embrace the values of sportsmanship – respect, integrity, and camaraderie – both on and off the chessboard. The ceremony also highlighted that true greatness lies not in trophies, but in the friendships and experiences built throughout the journey.

The 10-day event is expected to draw regional attention as Malaysia once again positions itself as a hub for international youth sporting events, celebrating unity through the intellectual sport of chess.
