The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) is exploring the idea of converting traditional longhouses into cultural homestays, offering travellers immersive experiences into Sarawak’s indigenous heritage while uplifting rural communities.
Tourism Minister Dato Seri Tiong King Sing said cultural tourism must go beyond passive observation. “It is a meaningful way to preserve our heritage—the Gawai spirit, authentic cuisine, and Dayak craftsmanship,” he said.
Tiong, who is also MP for Bintulu and Dudong assemblyman, added that this initiative would not only enrich visitor experiences but also bring direct benefits to local villagers. “We’re happy to explore this together and create a win-win outcome for both culture and economy,” he said, inviting longhouse communities interested in the programme to reach out to his team or local Bintulu officers.
He also urged communities to work hand-in-hand for progress. “As long as we stay united, respect one another, and support each other—not just minding our own backyard—our nation will surely continue to progress.”
The announcement came during Tiong’s Gawai Dayak visits to several longhouses, including Rumah Joseph ak Gima, Rumah Moses ak Kamarau, Rumah Joshua Manik ak Bayu, Rumah Unji ak Brain, and Rumah Emi ak Mesa.
