BROOME:

In a major blow to regional connectivity and tourism, Qantas has announced the closure of Jetstar Asia, ending its only international route between Broome and Singapore effective 29 July 2025.

The route, which operated twice weekly between April and October, was expected to bring in over 6,500 visitors annually and was a vital link for both tourism and locals seeking international travel options without transiting through Perth.

Qantas cited underperformance as the reason behind the decision, stating that most passengers were Broome residents and that flights were operating at low capacity. However, local tourism leaders have labelled the move as “short-sighted” and a missed opportunity, saying the service was beginning to gain traction.

Australia’s North West Tourism CEO Bill Tatchell expressed deep disappointment: “This is not a route failure — it’s an airline failure. Businesses have invested significantly in promoting the service, and this comes as a bitter pill.”

Broome International Airport CEO Craig Shaw confirmed the airport received no prior notice and is now left without any international air connection. Efforts will be made to secure a replacement carrier, but officials acknowledge it won’t be easy.

With 500 jobs set to be lost in Singapore due to the closure of Jetstar Asia, Qantas has pledged to redeploy some aircraft to Australia, potentially creating 100 domestic roles.

Local business owners and tourism operators are bracing for the impact, calling the announcement a “big loss” for the Broome community and its tourism ecosystem.
