PUTRAJAYA:

Russia and Malaysia are taking steps towards launching direct air connections between the two countries, following the second meeting of the Russian-Malaysian Working Group on Tourism held in Putrajaya.

The Russian delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Economic Development Dmitry Vakhrukov, with discussions centred on expanding mutual tourist flows, simplifying travel procedures, and enhancing cooperation in the tourism sector.

Both sides exchanged insights on promoting national tourism products, shared achievements in domestic and inbound tourism, and outlined plans for closer collaboration. According to the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, the meeting underscored the growing demand for travel between the two nations.

Vakhrukov highlighted that Russian arrivals to Malaysia in 2024 surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 40%, reaching 113,000 visits. “The launch of direct flights will be an important driver not only for resort tourism but also for business travel,” he said.

Key areas of discussion included the drafting of an intergovernmental agreement on tourism, easing visa procedures for Malaysian citizens, and developing joint tour packages. Both parties also agreed to strengthen industry ties through participation in tourism exhibitions and trade fairs.

Tourism experts note that Malaysia is increasingly viewed by Russians as an exotic and appealing destination, with direct connectivity seen as crucial to unlocking further potential in the market.
