In a major move to enhance air connectivity and regional business ties, the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) conducted a strategic courtesy visit to Cambodia Airways headquarters in Phnom Penh, ahead of the launch of the airline’s inaugural direct flight service connecting Phnom Penh and Penang.
The high-level engagement, held on 17 June 2025, was led by Mr. Ashwin Gunasekeran, Chief Executive Officer of PCEB, accompanied by Ms. Siti Sarah Ismail, Head of Sales & Marketing, and Mr. Terry Neoh, Marketing & Communications Manager. The delegation met with top executives of Cambodia Airways, including Mr. Guowei Bai, Executive Deputy General Manager; Mr. Daniel Li, Deputy Director of the Marketing Committee; and Ms. Sok Ravy, Assistant to the CEO SOB of Cambodia Airways.
This timely meeting was organised to support the successful launch of the upcoming Phnom Penh–Penang direct route, which is set to begin operations on 26 June 2025, with twice-weekly flights every Thursday and Sunday. The service marks a historic milestone in regional connectivity between Cambodia and northern Malaysia.
PCEB’s discussions with Cambodia Airways centred on forging collaborative strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of the new route. Among the key focus areas were:
Joint marketing efforts to boost visibility and passenger demand;
Tourism and cultural promotion campaigns targeting both Malaysian and Cambodian travellers;
Strategic collaborations to develop business, MICE, and trade-related travel opportunities;
Exploring cross-sector partnerships involving heritage, education, and creative industries.
With Penang emerging as a top-tier destination for business events and investment, the direct link to Phnom Penh is expected to catalyse business travel, strengthen bilateral ties, and promote economic growth in both regions.
Both Penang and Cambodia boast UNESCO-recognised heritage sites — George Town in Penang, and Phnom Penh and Siem Reap’s rich historical offerings. This shared cultural heritage opens vast potential for:
Cultural tourism exchange;
Joint heritage and education programmes;
Deeper people-to-people engagement.
Moreover, the route serves as a strategic transit point, offering business travellers and tourists seamless access between Cambodia and northern Malaysia, while connecting them to wider ASEAN destinations via Penang’s expanding international network.
As part of its continuous mission to position Penang as a regional hub for business events, PCEB views this air route as a bridge to new opportunities. The bureau is committed to working closely with Cambodia Airways and tourism stakeholders to:
Promote Penang as a gateway to Malaysia’s northern economic corridor;
Encourage Cambodian outbound tourism, especially for events, leisure, and medical tourism;
Facilitate inbound MICE and trade delegations to explore Penang’s infrastructure and investment potential.
This initiative supports the broader efforts of the Penang State Government to expand international accessibility, attract foreign investment, and enhance its appeal as a key destination within Southeast Asia. With its dynamic economy, modern facilities, and diverse offerings, Penang stands ready to welcome Cambodian travellers and businesses.
The Phnom Penh–Penang route is more than just a new air connection — it is a symbol of partnership, cultural exchange, and regional progress.
