GEORGE TOWN:

Penang is set to further strengthen its regional air connectivity with the launch of a new direct flight route from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, beginning 26 June 2025. The twice-weekly service, operated by Cambodia Airways, marks the first direct air link between the Cambodian capital and the island state.

The announcement was made by Penang State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who described the move as a milestone in enhancing Penang’s role as a regional aviation hub and aligning with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025.

“The launch of this direct service opens new doors for tourism, trade, and bilateral collaboration between Malaysia and Cambodia,” said Wong in a statement. “It provides convenient options for both business and leisure travellers and supports our shared vision for stronger ASEAN integration.”

The flights, operating every Thursday and Sunday, will depart Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) at 8:05 AM and arrive at Penang International Airport (PIA) at 10:55 AM. The return leg will depart Penang at 11:55 AM and land in Phnom Penh at 12:40 PM.

This development comes on the heels of the recent Chengdu-Penang route launch on 30 April, underscoring Penang’s growing international connectivity. With Phnom Penh added, Penang now has direct air connections with six ASEAN nations: Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia.

Wong emphasised that with this latest addition, PIA now serves 22 international destinations, reinforcing Penang’s strategic position in the regional aviation and tourism landscape.

“Air transport is a vital pillar under the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025,” Wong noted. “This new route reflects our commitment to realising the ASEAN Single Aviation Market and deepening integration among member states.”

The new route is expected to not only boost tourist arrivals but also attract business travellers and investors, elevating Penang’s role in cross-border collaboration and economic growth within Southeast Asia.
