Penang:

Malaysia is set to make history in cruise tourism with the homeporting of Piano Land, the first-ever Chinese cruise ship to be based in the country. The landmark agreement, signed today between Hwajing Travel & Tours and China’s Astro Ocean Cruise, will see the 1,760-passenger vessel begin operations from Penang on 30 November 2025.

This development also makes Piano Land only the second international cruise ship to ever homeport in Malaysia, solidifying the nation’s growing prominence in the regional cruise market.

The signing ceremony took place at the Penang Port Commission and was officiated by Kenny Cheong, Managing Director of Hwajing Travel & Tours, and Jian-feng Tong, Vice President of Astro Ocean Cruise. It was witnessed by Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin, Chairman of the Penang Port Commission and Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia.

“This is a key milestone in our strategic expansion across Asia,” said Tong. “Piano Land’s culture and cruise model is uniquely positioned to attract demand from Malaysia and neighbouring markets.”

Cheong, whose company marks its 36th anniversary this year, added, “We are committed to making cruise holidays more accessible and enriching for both Malaysian and Southeast Asian travellers. This also strengthens Malaysia’s position as a homeport hub for international cruises.”

The initiative aligns with the vision of Malaysia’s Transport Minister, YB Anthony Loke, to position Malaysia as a premier cruise hub. Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin emphasised the broader impact: “By encouraging travellers to begin and end their cruise journeys here, we aim to boost tourist arrivals, create jobs, and showcase Malaysia’s vibrant culture and cuisine globally.”

Piano Land’s initial itineraries include three-day roundtrips between Penang and Port Klang beginning 30 November, with additional departures on 2, 4, 6, and 11 December. Four-day cruises on 8 and 13 December will also include Langkawi.

A highlight is the special six-night New Year Countdown Cruise, sailing from Port Klang to Singapore, Nha Trang (Vietnam), and culminating in Hong Kong with a fireworks celebration over the iconic skyline.

Catering to regional preferences, the vessel offers extensive halal options, along with Chinese and international cuisine, ensuring wide appeal among Malaysian and Southeast Asian guests.

Piano Land’s arrival marks Hwajing Travel & Tours’ second major international cruise collaboration and signifies a new chapter in Malaysia’s cruise tourism growth.
