Kajang satay has officially been declared Selangor’s heritage food, cementing its place as a cultural and gastronomic treasure of the state.
The proclamation was officiated by Her Royal Highness Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, during the Karnival 1001 Rasa Sate Kajang held in Kajang today.
Selangor State Exco for Housing and Culture, Datuk Borhan Aman Shah, announced that the dish was gazetted as a historic object under the Selangor Malay Customs and Heritage Corporation Enactment 2009 on July 31.
“Sate Kajang refers to a satay dish originating from Kajang around 1870, later popularised by the late Tasnim Kasiban and his brother Rono in 1917. Since then, its legacy has continued through generations, bringing recognition not only to Kajang and Selangor but also to Malaysia,” he said.
The dish, typically prepared with marinated meat or chicken skewered on bamboo sticks and served with a rich peanut sauce and special satay sambal, has long been an iconic culinary symbol of the state.
Borhan added that the gazettement honours the contribution of satay vendors from past generations while recognising the efforts of present-day entrepreneurs in safeguarding its authenticity and flavours.
The Karnival 1001 Rasa Sate Kajang 2025, which runs from August 22 to 24, features a variety of satay and coffee vendors, providing a platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products.
This recognition also aligns with the Visit Selangor Year 2025 campaign and serves as a precursor to Visit Malaysia Year 2026, with gastro-tourism highlighted as a key element in heritage promotion.
