LANGKAWI:

The Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) has launched the Langkawi Cyclotourist Trail to provide visitors with the opportunity to discover the nature of the island by bicycle.

Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah, joint chairman of LADA, stated that seven routes have been prepared to allow tourists to enjoy the island's views and products.

The Legendary Route, Ironman Route, Gunung Raya Route, 99Bikes MTB Trail, Chengkuan MTB Trail, Bukit Sawak Trail, and Buffalo Park Trail are the seven routes.

“Langkawi has great potential to become a pioneer of the cyclotourism (also known as bike tourism) concept because the island is already known as the venue for international-standard cycling events such as the Le Tour de Langkawi and Ironman Malaysia.

“The uniqueness and variety of its landscape, as well as its biodiversity, make the cycling routes in Langkawi more interesting to be explored via cycling, ” he said after officiating the Langkawi Cyclotourism Trail.

Mohd Suhaimi said LADA would also introduce the Ridescape 2.4-km cycle path to be utilised by local tourist enthusiasts in Kuala Sungai Melaka.

“The development of the second phase of upgrading works to provide basic facilities will be implemented in that area. A total of RM80,000 has been spent to revive the place.

“A lot of European countries have become famous destinations through the cyclotourism concept. In Langkawi, we are lucky to have interesting flora and fauna – hopefully, one day Langkawi will also become the destination of choice for tourists and the international cycling fraternity, ” he said.

In the meantime, he said LADA has also designed pamphlets on the Langkawi Cyclotourism Trail, containing basic information about cycling routes, other than the details of bicycles sale and service centres on the island.
