MALAYSIA:

A virtual visit to the Taiping Zoo & Night Safari yesterday morning may have brought some relief to those who wanted to attend the tourist site but couldn't because of the Movement Control.

The Facebook Live and Instagram events, which offered a free visit to the zoo starting at 10 a.m. and featured the zoo's estuarine crocodiles, garnered positive feedback.

During the visit, six estuarine crocodiles were placed in a big area to facilitate mating and basking, according to Taiping Zoo & Night Safari veterinary officer Dr Muhammad Ridzuan Affendi.

“Male crocodiles weigh between 450 and 600 kilograms and grow to be 6.3 meters long, while females weigh 200 to 300 kilograms and grow to be approximately three meters long.

“This reptile can live up to 70 years and lay five to seven eggs at a time, with a 90-day incubation period,” he explained.

The zoo began the virtual program after tourism activities were halted because to the Covid-19 outbreak, despite the fact that it had previously attracted visitors every weekend and during public holidays.

The 14-hectare Taiping Zoo, which opened in 1961, is the country's oldest and has around 1,300 animals from 180 different kinds.
