ALOR SETAR:

Kedah Menteri Besar, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said, that Kedah will increase enforcement and closely track compliance with the standard operating procedure (SOP) among Langkawi passengers to curb the spread of COVID-19.

He said that serious attention needs to be paid to this matter because ferry passengers reported failing to comply with the SOP including removal of face masks when using the service.

"We discussed this at the state executive council (exco) meeting and we know that Langkawi has now become a choice for tourists, therefore I instructed excos to take a more serious role in the transport and tourism sector.

"SOP for public transport services have been provided by the Ministry of Transport and must be enforced. The problem arises when SOP enforcement in ferries cannot be controlled," he said.

Meanwhile, the state health department has found that COVID-19 cases in Kedah have increased since inter-state travel was permitted, Muhammad Sanusi said.

"There are no problems with interstate travels, but the problem is now that some individuals are not adhering to the SOP, which creates a risk for others, in particular for high-risk groups," he added.
