KEDAH:

Through the implementation of the Langkawi 2021-2022 Tourism Recovery Plan, the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) hopes to boost tourism revenue on the island to over RM288 million from September to December this year (PPP).

According to Mentri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, 590,000 tourists are expected to visit this renowned vacation spot during the plan's implementation phase.

“In 2022, LADA estimates that Langkawi will generate a revenue of RM1.17 billion and receive up to 2.5 million tourists,” he said in a media statement after the LADA online board meeting yesterday.

The plan's key objective, according to Muhammad Sanusi, who is also LADA's co-chairman, is to revitalise Langkawi's economy and restore tourists' trust and confidence in order to encourage them to visit the island.

He expressed the expectation that the short-term plan will contribute in the recovery of the Langkawi community's economic well-being, which has been affected by the Covid-19 outbreak since last year.

According to Muhammad Sanusi, in order to attract tourists, Langkawi must be advertised as a great and safe tourist destination, and stakeholders are encouraged to offer attractive packages such as the "Langkawi Great Sale" at a number of strategic places.

“Langkawi also needs to host high-impact events such as sports events, cultural performances, e-sports tournaments, concerts, PUBG competitions and food festivals.

“These events, which will comply with the new norms to ensure the island is Covid-free, will help revive the ailing tourism industry in Langkawi.”

He further said that in order to help the government attain herd immunity, the state is working to vaccinate around 76,400 of Langkawi's 100,000 population.

He said that all of LADA's measures are in line with the state and federal governments' plans to assist the local community in its recovery and to accelerate rehabilitation efforts in Langkawi.
