MELAKA:

Different tourism items from Melaka are expected to be on the online shopping platforms of Lazada and Shopee, the state assembly was told yesterday.

Datuk Muhamad Jailani Khamis, Chairman of the State Tourism, Heritage and Culture Committee, said that the initiative would increase the revenues of tourism operators in the future and expand the sector.

"The Melaka chapter of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division brought in representatives from Lazada and Shopee about 10 days ago for a meeting to brief them on this.

"It involved about 70 tourism players and they were provided information on how to register their products on the two platforms,” he said at the sitting of the assembly at Kompleks Seri Negeri here.

He replied to Datuk Amiruddin Yusof (BN-Ayer Limausupplementary )'s query concerning the state's attempts at attracting tourists domestically and internationally.

However, Muhamad Jailani did not define the kind of product or service to be advertised on both platforms.

Muhamad Jailani (Ind-Rembia) added that the transition is also in line with future patterns of industry, with online shopping being increasingly common among all ages.

He said the state government was aware of this but was the latest medium in the business world when it asked Adly Zahari (PH-Bukit Katil) an additional question about profit margins using this approach as the goods were supposed to cost more.

"We cannot stop technological advances and we take seriously that there is no profiteering but the process of registering the products on this platform depends on the agreement between the operator and the party handling the sale,” he said.
