Perlis handicrafts festival promotes local handicrafts products

Malaysian Handicrafts Development Corporation together with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) organized Perlis Craft Festival for the first time in Perlis. 

Perlis State EXCO for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage, YB Asmaiza Ahmad said that a lot of programs are in action this year to draw tourists to Perlis in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020.

" We have planned and added almost 50 programs in our calendar for Perlis this year to attract tourist and also to show them that Perlis is rich in greenery and agriculture," she said.

She also added that with the help of the government, the Perlis people should take the opportunity to promote the state as well.

Besides the locals, Kelantan, Terengganu and Selangor entrepreneurs also participated in the festival.

Meanwhile, Encik Ahmad Said, Director of Malaysian Handicraft Perlis Branch said the organization is joining a partnership with Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) for entrepreneurs to produce teak wood products that come from Perlis itself.

" We have sent two entrepreneurs from outside to join the course with FRIM to produce products from wood but with Teak wood. Other states produce products with metals but we here in Perlis are mainly focusing on woodwork product out of Teak wood" he said.

The festival includes few demonstrations, such as wood carving, Wau making, batik coloring, and traditional food dishes of Perlis cooking.

In the same time, the festival will also raise public awareness of the variety of handicraft products available in Perlis while attracting more domestic and international tourists to visit Perlis in conjunction with the promotion campaign for Malaysia 2020 Visit Year.

The Perlis Craft Festival began today, 23rd January and ends on 2nd February 2020 at Malaysian Handicraft Perlis Branch.
