Sabah will concentrate on marketing Mount Trusmadi, the second-highest peak in Malaysia, as a tourist destination. Mount Trusmadi is located in the interior Tambunan district on the Crocker Range.

According to State Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Environment Datuk Christina Liew, Sabah would back initiatives that highlight the 2,642-meter mountain's unique biodiversity.

She promised the ministry's full support for the first-ever Mount Trusmadi International Climbathon 2024 on May 25, which is being arranged by the Velocity Running Club in collaboration with the state Forestry Department and Tambunan district council. This commitment was made on Thursday, February 1.

"It is time to promote Mount Trusmadi, the second highest mountain in Malaysia, and the natural beauty of the area, both locally and in the international arena."

I applaud the organizers for being proactive in scheduling this global event, which could lead to the creation of a brand-new eco-tourism offering.

"Other than the climbathon, climbing enthusiasts should be encouraged to scale the mountain as a fitness activity," she stated.

The goal of the climb then, according to Liew, is to increase awareness of the mountain—which is not as well-known as Mount Kinabalu

It is well known that Mount Trusmadi has unusual wildlife and flora, including pitcher plants and a variety of bird species.

The climbathon's organizers hope to attract 500 participants, both domestic and foreign.

During a courtesy call at Liew's office here, Sabah deputy chief conservator of forests (operations) Musa Salleh and race director Andrew Lian Awa, president of Velocity Running Club, briefed her on the event.

The climbathon will begin at the Kupu-Kupu Gate in Mount Trusmadi's Nuluhon Forest Reserve.

Two categories will be available: a 21-kilometer route for locals, open to both men and women and a 30-kilometer route for climbers from abroad. There will be cash prizes worth RM29,600 available for winners.

The climbathon is advertised as a chance to explore the "pristine wilderness and breathtaking landscape" of the area in addition to being a test of physical endurance and resolve.

"It is going to be an exciting and tough competition, given its challenging trail route," Musa stated.
