MELAKA:

The government of Melaka will revive its subsidiary Melaka Heritage Sdn Bhd (Melaka heritage), which plays the role to protect, restore and maintain historic and cultural heritage sites, in particular historic buildings.

Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis, Chairman of the State Committee for Tourism, Heritage and Culture, said that comprehensive structuring of the Melaka Heritage would also permit work for the preservation of patrimonial constructions by January of the following year.

He said that the conservation programme will also utilise the funds allocated from the collection of the Tabung Amanah Caj Warisan (heritage charge trust fund), managed by the Historical City Council of Melaka, to provide for historical heritage and tourism income sites of the State.

“The state has about 300 hectares of main heritage enclaves and buffer areas that are recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), including various buildings such as shophouses, places of worship, administrative buildings and so on.

“Among the suggestions are to repaint the buildings according to colour code, besides ensuring the cleanliness and beautification of the surrounding areas as well as to repair the facilities at these buildings,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly sitting at Kompleks Seri Negeri, here.

Earlier, Muhammad Jailani told the assembly that the appointed consultant was now in the design phase of the Gadek Hot Spring development project in Alor Gajah and the contract was scheduled to open early next year.

He said the project would take 18 months, approved under the 11th Malaysia Programme, to cost RM17,9 million.

It added that the project will include expanding the recreation area and constructing a theme park, accommodation, drainage, water retention pond and retention wall, so water can be overflowed and floods such as those that occurred in 2018 and 2019 can be avoided.

Muhammad Jailani (Ind-Rembia) was replying to G. Saminathan (DAP-Gadek) who asked for an update on the Gadek Hot Spring project and initiatives taken by the government to attract tourists and promote the Gadek constituency.
